Sledding! - 16 March (Mon)

After hiking back down from the Neuschwanstein, it was still very bright out - after 4:00 I guess. We got back to the parking lot and ate sandwiches at the car. Marget and Penny had made them. We also had fruit and of course there was chocolate. Freshly fortified, they lead us on to the sledding area.

Now I didn't know what to expect. I assumed there would be a long hill that we would slide down and then climb up and slide down over and over. But, we drove up a moutain road to a parking lot that was covered in snow. Then we got out the sleds and started walking up the snow covered road. We walked and walked and then we realized that we were going to be walking up to the top of the mountain - about a 1 hour walk. There is a small restaurant - actually a hut - at the top where we can get refreshment.

After about 45 minutes of walking, we saw a sign that said two things.....we were still over 1 hour from the top of the mountain and the restaurant (Drehhuette) is closed on Mondays. SO - we decided to walk a little further and then turn around. We slid all the way back to the car. We FLEW down the hill. Penny and Keane were on one sled. Finn and I were on another. One of the three sleds did not slide as well. Burkhard and Dominik, of course, insisted that they should take that sled. I'm telling you they are the most generous hosts - even the kids!

When we got back to the bottom, the boys ran back up the last stretch so they could do it again, but compared to the upper elevations, the snow here was pretty slushy.

We left this place and started back. Burkhard was always conscious of picture opportunities, so he stopped us so Penny could snap a picture of the sunset over the Alps.....

As we drove back toward Burggen, we passed a Ski Lift (in Buchberg) that was closed down for the day, but we stopped anyway and climbed up (on foot) about 15 minutes so we could slide down the hill to the car. The sun was still setting.....

We got back to the house - I think that they make the roads windy on purpose to make the driving more fun for Burkhard. He's also a very good driver.

We had cold cuts, bread and sauerkraut for dinner - Brotzeit, then we put the kids to bed and the adults stayed up until Midnight talking and drinking beers. It was another very full day.
