Easy Afternoon - 17 Mar (Tue)

After sledding, we were home to clean up and warm up. Marget was so kind to help us keep laundry going. No one in Germany seemed to have a dryer. Everyone hung their clothes to dry. We had hoped to do laundry, so we could pack lightly. It worked out very well and we didn't have to re-wear clothes too many times before washing.

Burkhard had been very busy at work with Klaus Zimmermann the Zimmermann. They had the Solar Panels up on the roof by the time we got back. These panels help heat water which is fed down to a HUGE water tank. The water tank is connected to hot water in the kitchen, bathrooms and showers and also connected to the radiators. The water tank is also partially heated from a wood burning oven in the center of the house, which also has vents out into the main room.

While they were working on the roof, I got a tour of one of the apartments by Paula (Burkhard's mother). She pointed out several pieces of furniture that Hans had made. I really loved his style. The beds he made each had the year carved into the headboard. The attic apartment above Paula and Hans was fully contained - living room, bedroom, bath, kitchen and balcony. It was beautiful. I could stay forever.

The workers were ready for an afternoon break and it had turned into a gorgeous day, so coffee, cakes and beer was served on the back patio (no pictures unfortunately). The kids were too busy playing to stop, so it was very nice. I must say that when Burkhard, Hans and Klaus spoke together, their dialect and the speed that they spoke was very difficult for me to understand. I could tell that they were discussing the work around the house and some other things that they had discussed previously. They also included me in several topics (auf Deutsch of course). Even though my spoken German continues to improve and would probably be considered pretty fluent, I still understand more than I can speak.

Penny, meanwhile, got an impromptu invitation from Burkhard's sister, Eva Maria, to go for a horse ride. Penny really enjoyed this since she had done quite a bit of riding when she was younger. She and Eva Maria made a good connection.
