After picking up Finn and Dominik from school, we drove down to Schwangau (not to be confused with Schongau) where the two famous castles are: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (note that "Schwan" means Swan).
Neuschwanstein is the castle built in the 1860s and 1870s by Bavarian King Ludwig II. Hohenschwangau is his father's castle - where Ludwig II grew up. The Neuschwanstein castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. It is supposedly the inspiration for the design of the Disney Cinderella's Castle. Even though the castle is HUGE, only 17 rooms were completed before Ludwig II died. He died mysteriously (maybe assasinated) shortly after doctors declared him mentally unfit to rule (which was possibly a lie to get rid of him).
The most famous view of the castle is from the bridge behind the castle. Unfortunately the path to the bridge was closed on the day that we went. 19 years ago, when I was in Germany, I visited the castle. I didn't go inside, but I did hike around to the bridge. I'll see if I can find pictures from that visit too.
Burkhard had never been inside the castle before, even though he had been to the castle and hiked around the castle many times. Marget has been verbally accepted to a job as a tour guide at Hohenschwangau (possibly starting in the Summer). She wanted to do the tour to see what the tour guides were like.
The hike to the top was pretty steep. There was a horse drawn carriage, but we made it by foot ok.
Here is a picture of the whole gang.....
